Benefits of Pipe Relining – Efficiency, Durability, and Minimal Disruption
Pipe relining is a smart choice for homeowners who want to avoid the time and expense of traditional pipe replacement. Here’s why Plumbing Plus recommends relining over replacement whenever possible:
With Plumbing Plus, you’re choosing an innovative, effective solution that keeps your home’s plumbing in top shape with minimal impact on your daily life.
Just like homes have evolved over time, the way homebuilders construct sewer pipes has undergone many changes in the past thirty years. Up until 1980, clay pipes were the norm. Not only is clay cost-effective, but it is environmentally friendly and reliable. After 1980, most homes were built with polyvinyl chloride pipes, which were designed to last over a hundred years. However, life doesn’t always go as planned, and this is true for the longevity of our pipes as well.
1. Inspection and Diagnosis:
The first step involves a thorough inspection of the damaged pipes. Professionals use specialized cameras to conduct a CCTV pipe inspection. This allows them to determine the exact location and extent of the damage, assess the pipe’s interior conditions, and plan the relining process accurately.
2. Cleaning and Preparation:
Before relining can begin, the existing pipes must be cleaned and cleared of any obstructions, residues, or roots. High-pressure water jetting is often used to remove debris and ensure the pipe is prepped for the liner installation.
3. Measuring and Cutting the Liner:
Based on the inspection data, a custom liner is prepared. This liner is typically made from a flexible textile impregnated with a resin mixture. It’s cut to the precise length required to repair the damaged section of pipe.
4. Impregnation and Inversion:
The cut liner is then impregnated with a specific resin, chosen based on the pipe material and the environment. The resin acts as a bonding agent and hardens to create a pipe within a pipe. The liner is then inverted using air or water pressure and inserted into the damaged pipe.
5. Curing the Resin:
Once the liner is in place, it needs to cure to form a solid, jointless new pipe. The curing process can be accelerated using hot water, UV light, or ambient cured depending on the resin type. This process can take several hours, after which the new lining will fully adhere to the old pipe, sealing all cracks and breaks.
6. Final Inspection and Quality Check:
After the resin has cured, another CCTV inspection is performed. This final check ensures that the liner has set correctly and that the pipe has been restored to its full functionality without any leaks or defects.
7. Reinstatement of Connections:
If any lateral connections were covered during the relining process, they would be robotically cut out to ensure proper service connections to the mainline.
Benefits of Pipe Relining
Less Intrusive: Unlike traditional methods, pipe relining does not require extensive digging, which means less disruption to your property and daily life.
Durable: The materials used in pipe relining are resistant to corrosion, abrasion, and have a long lifespan.
Quick: The process can often be completed in a day, depending on the extent of the damage and the length of pipe being relined.
Pipe relining is also called Cured In-Place Pipelining (CIPP). When we reline your pipes, our goal is to repair the pipes from the inside out. In order to accomplish this, we use a special resin that cures with time and strengthens the pipe. This works because we utilize a resin-saturated felt tube from a material like polyester or fiberglass and insert it into the damaged pipe.
If you have been having issues with your pipes, or they are around 40 years old, it’s probably time to get them inspected. If you have noticed any of the following problems in your home, your pipes are likely damaged and will need to be relined:
